And
now their entrepreneurial skills are being rewarded
with a paid-for trip to an international conference
at a top hotel in Sydney, Australia.
John,
44, said: "People say it is too good to
be true, but this can happen if you work hard."
The pair started their venture selling from
the household products catalogue in 1997 while
living at Southerness, on the Solway coast near
Dumfries, where Sarah worked at a holiday village.
Former
hairdresser John said: "We were looking
for a way to earn some extra money and maybe
get out of our jobs."
"After
doing a lot of different things, we eventually
joined Kleeneze. We left our jobs at the end
of 1999 because we were earning more from Kleeneze
than from them."
Sarah,
42, added: "We were more excited about
this than our jobs and we put a lot of effort
and energy into keeping this going."
In
the first year alone, the McKies, who have been
married for 15 years and have three young daughters
had a turnover of around £120,000, rising
to £3.8 million last year.
They
boosted their selling income by introducing
others to the marketing team, gaining a slice
of their profits, then a cut from all the people
they introduced. Now they are connected in some
way to 650 different independent Kleeneze representatives.
What
makes these figures all the more incredible
is the fact that the couple had a two year break
because of illness between 2001 and 2003. "It
has grown gradually every year it has got bigger
and bigger," said John. "Network marketing
is one of the fastest growth industries in the
world."
The
McKies now concentrate on introducing new sales
people and giving training.
Sarah
said: "We use our experience to support
them."
Now the couple will celebrate their success
on a trip to the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney
Harbour. It will be the fifth time Kleeneze
have rewarded their sales representatives. Previous
trips included Monte Carlo and the Caribbean.
Despite
the magnitude of their success, John said he
was "not surprised" by it, saying:
"We could always see the potential."
