Budding young
entrepreneurs from Wakefield are
invited to attend the launch of a campaign devised to unlock the
region’s enterprise potential.
Organisers, Make
Your Mark, have linked up with home shopping experts, Kleeneze, to run
a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style initiative where Wakefield
pupils will be challenged to design a brand new product for the famous
Kleeneze catalogue.
Dubbed ‘The
Kleeneze Challenge’ it is being launched at Minsthorpe Secondary School
in Wakefield on Friday 26th September where
pupils from local schools will also have the opportunity to hear talks
from well-known local inventors such as Steve Ascough, who will be
mentoring pupils throughout the campaign.
Eighteen schools
from the Wakefield
area have been invited to take part in the launch and will be asked to
enter teams of four to eight pupils by 3rd
October. Each team
will be required to submit a presentation on their new product by 14th
November, which will then be judged by a panel of Make Your Mark and
Kleeneze judges and announced on the final on the 19th
November.
The winning team will win a commemorative
plaque for their school along with individual prizes for all the team
members.
Make Your Mark is a national campaign which
aims to create a culture that supports enterprising people and
enterprise itself to create economic and social impact. The Make Your
Mark Challenge is the UK’s
largest ever live enterprise competition and Kleeneze is supporting the
younger categories.
Jane Walton, Head of Campaign at Make Your Mark comments:
“Statistics show that the proportion of business start-ups initiated by
16-24 year olds has risen from 6.5% in 2003 to 8% by 2007. Running a
business is the top career choice for nearly two-thirds (62%) of young
people. Therefore, providing young people with the facility to explore
enterprise is important – particularly in today’s economic climate of
competitive global markets and unprecedented global challenges.”
Jamie Stewart, Managing director at Kleeneze
comments: “This is a fantastic project to be involved with and we are
more than happy to assist. We believe that education has a key role to
play in guiding young people in their future careers and helping them
to explore entrepreneurship as an option. We are very excited to see
the ideas that the teams present, and we are sure they will devise some
really unique ideas.”
Many people have untapped entrepreneurial
potential and lack the motivation, confidence and experience to turn
their ideas into reality. New and existing businesses often fail to
grow at a rate that would drive UK
competitiveness and productivity. Make Your Mark aims to use enterprise
to unlock the talent and potential of everyone in the UK.
Leanne Bradley,
the school’s technology teacher and event organiser, said: “We see the
Kleeneze challenge as a great opportunity for the students of Wakefield
to work on an open brief, using their entrepreneurial skills to build
on and develop their knowledge and understanding of designing
innovative products.”
