Dave and Mary Freeman

Hello, my name is David Freeman.  With my wife Mary we have been Kleeneze distributors for 6 weeks.

Mary has a full-time job and I was made redundant for the 2nd time in 2 years back in February 09.  Before losing this job I had been out of work for 14 months.

I was struggling to get work, filling out many application forms, writing letters etc, I was getting nowhere.

I have over 20 years experience in the Catering Industry,  2 years as a Facilities Support Officer and then 6 years as a Retail Manager, from which I was made redundant in 2006.  I had a few interviews but was offered nothing.

Not so unusual you may say but since 1992 I have had a serious visual impairment and in 1999 was registered as blind.

Employers were not prepared to give me a chance to show them that the jobs I was applying for I could do.  There is a lot of equipment out there to help people with a visual impairment to enable them to do the same job as a fully sighted person.

“You can not do that job because of your visual impairment” and “Because of Health & Safety rules you can not do that”, two sentences I have heard many a time.

I am not one to sit back and live off the state, I want to get out there and earn a living.

So when Mary first read the ad in the local paper about earning money on a part-time or full-time basis, I thought lets find out what this is about.

After ringing the number I sat back, waited and thought I bet I do not even get a call back, but the next evening I got information through and we watched the Kleeneze video.  After a few phone calls over the next week, Rob Branch came to see us and he answered all my questions in clear laymen’s terms, not putting any pressure on us whatsoever.

Mary and I had a good chat after Rob had left and we decided to give it a go, what had we to lose?

It was going to be difficult for me but I would be working for myself and I would have no one to say those things to me about not being able to do this and do that for what ever reason.

Since joining the Kleeneze business it’s been hard work, and challenging but I am thoroughly enjoying myself.
Having to overcome some of the hurdles, things that most people with good sight take for granted, such as the round books (too small to see)

I have overcome this by transferring the round book onto A4 paper and printing it in large print and coming up with something different rather than dots etc. and using a Dictaphone when needed, standing on the path, firstly finding the door and secondly how to get there from the path, then having to find the letterbox, bell or house number.

To walk up pathways very carefully, just in case there are any hazards, i.e. steps up or down.

It will be quite interesting when the clocks go back soon, as in the dark I am totally blind.

Our 2 daughters like to be involved and will help me whenever they can. I’m hearing the words “step” or “kerb” shouted out a lot more these days!!!

Kleeneze for me is great, I am my own boss and all I have to do in the morning is put my false eye in!! get dressed and get on with it, being out in the fresh air,  you can’t beat it,  the exercise is great and I can earn whilst doing it.

I listen to all the stories from my upline and listen carefully when they explain the rules, I myself have a negative rule when retailing, I keep bumping into things and sometimes falling over, but I just brush myself down, get up, and get on with it.

Listening to speakers at conferences, what they have achieved and the goals they have reached makes me feel I would like some of that and nothing is going to stand in my way, not even being registered blind.
